Spuistraat, Amsterdam

December 3 2013 , Written by Wing-Fai Thi

When I was living in Amsterdam and was working at ESTEC (Noordwijk, close to Leiden), I was commuting every day. I was walking twice a day through one of street with the most bizarre combination of shops and institutions you can imagine. The name of street is Spuistraat.

1: Leger des heils (Salvation Army)

4: Bitterzoet, a nice café, restaurant, and music club house

12: Church (Dominicus Kerk)

21: Gay sex shop/cinema

6, 24, 38, 62: red-light windows. Well, I was walking the street every day (instead of biking). After a few weeks, every morning I was greeting the ladies who were closing their “shop” and in the evening when they open their business.

75: Church of Scientology

80: “Coffee” shop

84: Bike shop

100: Female & partners (sex shop)

103: Innerspace (smart shop)

109: Prik, a gay bar

110: Start People (www.startpeople.nl)

112: Royal Air Maroc

116: Le Cellier, a decent wine shop

134: University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam Center for the Study of the (Dutch) Golden Age & University Library (PC Hoofthuis)

I have been to a few of the places mentioned above. Guess which ones.

Choose your sin.
